For the last year St. Timothy' Vestry and Family Ministry Committee have engaged in a thorough review of how St. Timothy’s supports our parents in raising their children in the Christian faith and life. Through surveys and listening sessions, we spent a year listening to the Spirit speak through this community’s experience. Perhaps the most significant thing we learned is how much our parents want to be connected to other parents and how much they want their children to be connected to other children. Our parents are clearly aware that they can’t raise their children in the faith without the support of each other. We also learned that St. Timothy’s and the broader Church needs to be open to how we do this now. We need to be open to where the Spirit will take us.
We had hoped that we would have a tentative long-term plan by this fall. However, in light of the unexpected retirement of Judy Gardner, Director of Children’s Spiritual Formation, and Alex Martin’s departure, we felt it was unwise to make any decisions about the long-term plan until we have reconstituted our staff. Therefore, we have come up with the following interim plan for the fall:
dash (dinner at someone's house)
To better facilitate spiritual development and relationship building among families, the Family Ministry Committee is launching a new initiative called DASH (Dinner at Someone’s House). These dinners will be hosted by one of our families and all other families are invited. The host will provide a main dish and guests will bring a dish to share. Click here for more information on DASH and a complete schedule. In addition to these dinners, we will also have a weekly gathering for parents during the church school hour in Room 6 downstairs. These gatherings will give parents an informal opportunity to compare notes about their parenting journeys.
Regarding Sunday morning programming, we have planned the following between the 9:00 am and 11:15 am worship services:
- 3-year-olds—K, Godly Play, Sallieann Atkins and assistants
- 1st-5th grade, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Catechists Renee Brown, Kara Owens, Christy Vonderschmidt, and assistants
- 6th-8th Youth Group, Steven Harper Ray, and one female leader TBD
- 9th-12th Youth Group, Jacob Perez, John Robinson, and one female leader TBD
Parents - Gathering for parents in Room 6 downstairs.
In addition to the above recommendations of the Family Ministry Committee, the Rector would like to experiment with a children’s music time immediately following the 9:00 am children’s sermon. Dan Parsley, our Director of Music, will meet with children then for 15 minutes before they return to the worship service.
The Family Ministry Committee would like to thank all the people who have volunteered to participate in the Sunday morning program. If you would like to assist in some way, please contact Committee Chair, Laura Caprino or Vestry Liaison, Steven Harper-Ray .
